DRONE NEWS: New Drones Legislation Passes House

On April 27, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 passed the House and is currently heading to the Senate.

Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania introduced H.R. 4, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 on April 13. The bill’s primary purpose is to ensure the FAA is funded until 2023. Along with ensuring funding this bill also addresses many droned-related issues.

H.R. 4 has the following impact on drone photography:

  • Directs the Department of Transportation to conduct a study on the oversight and regulations of law altitude operations of drones and what the appropriate responsibilities each level of government should have (local, state, federal).
  • Updates Drone Regulation Section 107.205 (flying from a moving vehicle) and Section 107.25 (flying out of line of sight).
  • Testing sites will be available for an additional 6 years after the passage of the bill.
  • Tracks compliance and effectiveness of registration.
  • Provides for additional research on drone usage in general.
